Chin Implants

A beautiful chin defines the ground floor and foundation of the face. Chin Implants is known in the plastic surgery world as Chin Augmentation, Mentum augmentation or Menton augmentation. This procedure aims to improve and enhance facial contours, usually in order to give more definition to the face and to make existing chin structure more prominent. A synthetic or biological implant is used in this procedure.

Surgical Procedure

Prior to surgery, the surgeon will choose the correct type, size and shape of implant to use in the procedure which is agreed by the patient at the time of consultation. The surgeon will then make a small incision along the inside of the lower lip or just under the chin to create a pocket-like area. The implant will then be placed inside the pocket.

Hospital Admission

This procedure is normally performed under local anesthesia which takes one to two hours of operation. No admission is necessary.

Pre Operative Care

Surgeons advised that patients to do the following prior to the chin implants surgery to avoid post operation bleeding or any complications: • Inform the surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that the patient are taking (both prescription and non-prescription) • Avoid aspirin and any medication containing aspirin or brufen for two weeks before surgery. • Avoid smoking for two weeks as smoking can affect body’s reaction to the anaesthetic and slow down the healing process. • Checkup for any major medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease During your consultation, you must clearly discuss your desired look with the surgeon so that he can determine with you what can realistically be achieved. You should wash the face and neck area with an antibacterial cleanser for a few days before surgery.

Post Operative Care

After Chin Implants the patient may experience some pain associated with the surgery. When the procedure is completed, a patient is advised of the following:

• Stitches and Dressings. Usually, the chin is taped following surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. The sutures in the skin will be removed in five to seven days. If an intraoral incision is used, the sutures will dissolve.
• Medications. Prescriptions for pain medication that the patient will take as needed, and antibiotics are administered to avoid any potential risks.
• Swelling and bruising. There may be some swelling and bruising around the chin, but this will generally fade within a week or two after the surgery.
• Recovery. Recuperation usually takes about a week. Most people are back to work after a week.

Risks and Complications

Risks are inherent to any surgical procedure. But do not worry, all precautions are taken by Plastic Surgery Phuket’s surgeons to avoid these risks.

Here are the most common risks of this surgery:
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Fluid
• Numbness from the anesthetic and swelling. Numbness of the lips should subside in 2-3 weeks.
• Changes in sensation in the chin due to damage nerve. This is usually temporary and progressively rectifies itself
• Asymmetry or “shifting” due to swelling, trauma or hematoma. If this happens a second surgery may be needed, however, this is not very common.
