Face Lift

FACE LIFT: Restoring Youthful Appearance The main reason for electing a facelift is to combat the effects of aging wherein the skin begins to lose elasticity, skin sags and facial tissue lose volume. The main complaints that can be corrected with a face lift are sagging facial skin, crow’s feet (laugh lines), deep creases below the eyelids, double chin appearance and loose neck skin. The usual candidates are men and women over the age of 40 years. Face Lift is known in the plastic surgery world as Rhytidectomy which is from an Ancient Greek word (rhytis) “wrinkle” + (ektome) “excision” the surgical removal of wrinkles.

Surgical Procedure

During a facelift, the tissues under the skin are tightened and fat pads that give the face its shape are relocated to a higher position. This helps to create a firmer, more youthful appearance. The surgeon makes an incision above and across the hairline in order to diminish scarring. The incision then follows the crease in front of the ear, behind the ear, and along the lower scalp so as to make scars invisible, with fine sutures. The surgeon separates the skin from the fat and tightens the muscles beneath with dissolvable sutures, then tightens and cuts the excess skin. Excess muscle may be trimmed, and excess fat may be suctioned from around the neck and chin area to improve the contour.

Hospital Admission

The surgeons recommend one night to three nights hospital admission depending on the area to be treated

Duration of Operation

The procedure may take two to ten hours

Anaesthetic

Face Lift is normally done using General anaesthesia in which the patient is asleep for the surgery.

Pre Operative Care

Surgeons advised that patients to do the following prior to the face lift surgery to avoid post operation bleeding or any complications: • Inform the surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that the patient are taking (both prescription and non-prescription) • Avoid aspirin and any medication containing aspirin or brufen for two weeks before surgery. • Avoid smoking for two weeks as smoking can affect body’s reaction to the anaesthetic and slow down the healing process. • Checkup for any major medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease During your consultation, you should discuss your expectations of the outcome of the surgery and listen to the surgeon’s opinion.

Post Operative Care

After Face Lift the patient may experience some pain associated with the surgery. When the procedure is completed, a patient is advised of the following:

• Drainage. A small tube is temporarily inserted under the skin behind your ear to drain any blood or excess fluid. This is usually removed a day after the surgery.
• Bandage and Garment. You may also wake with your head in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling. Loose bandages will be removed with a couple of days, but a compression garment may have to be worn for a few weeks.
• Medications. Prescriptions for pain medication that the patient will take as needed, and antibiotics are administered to avoid any potential risks.
• Swelling and bruising. There may be some swelling and bruising around the face, but this will generally fade within 2 weeks after the surgery.
• Strenuous Activities. Patients are advised to avoid any strenuous activities such as jogging, heavy housework, sex, bending, or any activity that may increase blood pressure to avoid tension on the wound, which could stretch your incisions and cause scarring. Exposure to the heat or sun should be limited for several months following surgery, including spas and saunas. Dental work is not advised.
• Recovery. Recuperation usually takes one to two weeks. Most people are back to work after two
