Labial Reduction

LABIAPLASTY: Genital Rejuvenation

Labial reduction is becoming more and more popular as society is becoming more accepting of cosmetic surgery in general. Many women suffer with congenital condition such as intersex (hermaphrodite), irregular, enlarged or misshaped labia due to multiple birth or sexual intercourse without proper arousal where the skin is not appropriately moistened to allow easy penetration. Others are uncomfortable wearing tight trousers or stockings because of enlarged labia. They likely to be self conscious and can become withdrawn and inhibited. This has become a day to day life problem. Most of the women do not discuss this problem as it is personal, sensitive and embarrassing. The good news to all those women who suffer this embarrassing condition is that there is a solution and it can be corrected.

Labia Reduction is known in the plastic surgery world as labiaplasty. This procedure aims to restore body appearance and to increase self-confidence.

Surgical/Procedure Name

Labiaplasty/Female Genital Rejuvenation

Surgical Procedure

During surgery the inner folds of the labia are timed so that they no longer protrude. This is done by either reducing the edges of the labia called the Trim Method or Wedge Method.

• Trim Method cut off the labia minora in a zig-zag cut leaving 1cm from the edge of labia majora. The surgeon will then clamp and cut the lips with a scalpel.
• Wedge Method The other method is by snipping out a ‘V’ shape wedge of tissue. This technique preserves a lot of the natural labia structure while reducing surface area. This method leaves one very small horizontal scar on the labia where the two sides of the wedge are removed and sewn together.

The surgeon ensures to provide a natural looking result as much as possible.

Hospital Admission

This procedure can either be done under local anesthesia where no admission is necessary or under general anesthesia with one night stay in the hospital

Duration of Operation

The procedure may take one to two hours

Pre Operative Care

Surgeons advised that patients to do the following prior to labia reduction surgery to avoid post operation bleeding or any complications:

• Inform the surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that the patient are taking (both prescription and non-prescription)
• Avoid aspirin and any medication containing aspirin or brufen for two weeks before surgery.
• Avoid smoking for two weeks as smoking can affect body’s reaction to the anaesthetic and slow down the healing process.
• Inform the surgeon if suffering from hypertension.

Post Operative Care

After labiaplasty, patients should expect the following:

• Stitches. You may need to wear a panty shield for approximately two weeks whilst your sutures dissolve. During this period you should bathe your vagina with warm salt water to prevent infection.
• Strenuous Activities. Avoid strenuous activity or sexual intercourse – this may take up to three weeks post surgery.
• Pain. After your surgery you may feel sensitive and tender and you may feel some discomfort when sitting.
• Medications. Prescriptions for pain medication that the patient will take as needed, and antibiotics that will be taken for several days to decrease chances of infection.
• Recovery. Your surgeon will advise you accordingly when you can resume normal activities. Most women return to work after a week or two.

Risks and Complications

Risks are inherent to any surgical procedure. But do not worry, all precautions are taken by Plastic Surgery Phuket’s surgeons to avoid these risks. There is a chance that you may suffer loss of sensitivity, but this is very rare.
